The Client

Our client is a global leader in poultry genetics, research, and innovation, operating at the forefront of the agricultural industry. Their broiler breeder brands are among the most recognised and respected worldwide, supported by a loyal international customer base and a long-standing reputation for quality and performance.

The business is committed to continuous improvement, regularly investing in innovative technologies and operational practices to enhance efficiency, productivity, and sustainability across its facilities. As part of this commitment, maintaining safe working environments for employees and contractors is a key priority, particularly in areas where regular maintenance access is required.

With multiple agricultural sites operating across Scotland, the client required a reliable and compliant roof safety solution that would support ongoing maintenance activities while ensuring operatives could work safely at height.

Kee Line, Kee Guard & Fixed Access Ladder Installation for Agricultural Facility - APS Safety

Background

APS Safety Systems received an inbound enquiry from the client after health and safety concerns were identified regarding roof access at one of their agricultural facilities. Maintenance teams required regular access to roof-mounted ventilation ducts, which are a critical component in maintaining the performance and environmental control of the poultry sheds.

However, the existing roof areas did not provide sufficient protection for operatives carrying out inspection and maintenance work at height. Safe access to the ventilation systems was essential, not only for worker safety but also to ensure the ongoing efficiency and performance of the site itself.

The client contacted APS Safety Systems to discuss the available options and identify the most suitable long-term solution for safe roof access and fall protection.

The Brief

The project required a complete roof access and fall protection solution that would allow maintenance teams to safely reach all roof-mounted ventilation systems. The system needed to provide continuous protection while ensuring ease of access for regular inspection and servicing work.

Key objectives included:

  • Providing safe access to all rooftop ventilation ducts
  • Ensuring operatives remained protected while working at height
  • Installing permanent access systems to improve efficiency and reduce risk
  • Delivering a fully compliant solution that met all current working-at-height legislation
  • Providing a durable system suitable for demanding agricultural environments

The client also required a solution that would support long-term operational reliability while minimising disruption during installation works.

The Solution

Following the enquiry, an APS Safety Systems representative attended site to carry out a full assessment and discuss the available options with the client. After reviewing the roof layout, access points, and maintenance requirements, APS recommended a combined solution incorporating Kee Line horizontal lifeline systems, fixed access ladders, and Kee Guard fixed guardrails.

The Kee Line system was installed to provide safe access across the roof areas, allowing operatives to remain continuously connected while moving between ventilation ducts. This ensures full fall protection throughout maintenance activities and significantly improves safety when working at height.

To further improve roof access, APS also installed fixed access ladders to create a safe and permanent route onto the roof areas. In addition, Kee Guard fixed guardrails were installed on either side of the ladder access points, providing collective edge protection and enhancing overall site safety.

Key features of the installed systems included:

  • Continuous fall protection through the Kee Line horizontal lifeline system
  • Permanent safe access via fixed access ladders
  • Collective protection provided by Kee Guard guardrails
  • Compliance with all current legislative requirements
  • Engineered safety posts designed to deploy and deform in the event of a fall, reducing the load applied to the building structure to below 10kN
  • Compatibility with approved roof surfaces, ensuring system integrity and long-term performance

The client was pleased with the proposed solution and instructed APS Safety Systems to proceed with the works. Installation was completed efficiently and in line with the agreed programme, ensuring minimal disruption to site operations.

The Outcome

The completed installation has transformed roof safety at the agricultural facility, providing maintenance teams with a secure and fully compliant means of accessing critical ventilation systems. Operatives can now safely move across roof areas while remaining continuously connected to the lifeline system, significantly reducing the risks associated with working at height.

Key benefits delivered include:

  • Improved worker safety through permanent fall protection systems
  • Safe and reliable access to roof-mounted ventilation equipment
  • Compliance with current working-at-height legislation
  • Reduced structural load impact in the event of a fall due to the engineered Kee Line post design
  • Long-term operational efficiency through fixed access solutions and durable safety systems

The success of the project also strengthened the relationship between APS Safety Systems and the client. Following completion of the initial installation, APS was invited to quote for the client’s remaining 13 farms across Scotland, with orders already secured for an additional three sites.

This ongoing programme demonstrates the client’s confidence in APS Safety Systems’ expertise and ability to deliver reliable, high-quality safety solutions across multiple agricultural environments.
