Our client manages one of Scotland’s largest shopping and leisure destinations, welcoming millions of visitors each year. Home to more than 150 retail brands, restaurants, leisure facilities, a luxury cinema, and an indoor ice rink, the centre is a key retail and community hub in South Lanarkshire.

Background

APS Safety Systems has worked with the shopping centre for several years, carrying out the regular inspection, testing, and recertification of its existing fall protection systems. Through these ongoing inspections, our engineers identified several areas where the existing rooftop safety measures no longer met modern best practice and recommended that sections of the roof be upgraded with permanent collective protection.

While these recommendations were documented and discussed with the client, financial challenges at the shopping centre meant the proposed improvement works could not be approved at the time.

Following a change in ownership and new investment into the site, funding became available to carry out the long-awaited safety improvements. APS Safety Systems was instructed to proceed with the recommended roof safety upgrades, ensuring maintenance contractors could work safely while supporting the centre’s wider redevelopment programme.

The Brief

The primary objective was to replace and improve the existing roof edge protection by installing a permanent, compliant guardrail system that would provide a safer working environment for contractors carrying out routine maintenance.

The Solution

The recommended solution was the installation of a Kee Guard rooftop guardrail system across the designated roof areas.

Kee Guard was selected because it provides the highest level of collective fall protection, in line with the hierarchy of control for working at height. Unlike personal fall arrest systems, collective protection creates a permanent physical barrier between operatives and roof edges, significantly reducing risk while simplifying access for maintenance teams.
