Kee Guard Fixed Installation for Safe Roof Access

Background

The project took place at a major waste management and recycling facility located within an industrial estate in Aberdeen. The site plays a critical role in supporting local authority recycling and waste services and includes a materials recovery facility, refuse-derived fuel processing plant, and a vehicle collection depot.

Originally opened in 2017, the facility suffered a significant fire in 2022, resulting in extensive damage. A £30 million reconstruction programme was subsequently launched to rebuild and upgrade the site, incorporating improved sorting technology, enhanced infrastructure resilience, and upgraded safety measures. The new facilities are scheduled to be fully operational by late summer 2025.

As part of the reconstruction works and wider safety planning, the principal contractor identified the need for permanent fall protection measures to support frequent roof access for maintenance and operational activities. APS Safety Systems was engaged to provide expert advice and deliver a compliant, long-term solution.

The Solution

APS designed and installed a Kee Guard Fixed guardrail system around the designated roof perimeter areas. This system was selected for its strength, versatility, and proven performance on industrial and infrastructure projects.

The Kee Guard Fixed solution is compatible with a wide range of roof types, including standing seam roofs, corrugated metal roofs, and roof pitches of up to 45 degrees, making it ideal for complex industrial environments. Its modular design allows the system to adapt easily to changes in roof geometry and elevation.

All components are galvanised to EN ISO 1461, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance. The horizontal rails are galvanised internally and externally, providing up to four times the corrosion resistance of standard galvanised pipework – a critical factor for exposed industrial locations.

The installation was carried out in full compliance with BS EN 14122, ensuring the system meets recognised standards for permanent access and edge protection. APS worked closely with the wider project team to integrate the guardrail installation seamlessly into the site’s reconstruction programme and overall safety strategy.
